Letitia, also known as Tish, is the passionate founder of Mastering Self-care and has over 14 years experience of empowering vulnerable residents in Croydon Communities. Most recently helping to create and deliver award winning innovative community projects within local government in Croydon that are sustainable and make huge community impacts. Growing up in Croydon in one of the most deprived areas, experiencing and overcoming many adversities.
Charlene, the driven founder of Pamper Indulge & Give charitable organisation, has run various successful health & wellbeing projects within Croydon schools and is a recognised face within the voluntary & faith community. The charity was awarded social enterprise of the year due to the charities outstanding work.
Providing over 200 children per year, across all Croydon schools, 8 week workshops to increase self-confidence, self-esteem, emotional regulation, finding opportunity & resilience in adversity, understanding self, others and the wider community in a fun and interactive way to meet all learners with all needs. At the end of each 8 week project, we have a celebration of differences bringing all the wonderful diverse experiences, beliefs, religions and cultures of Croydon.
Creating exceptional Mastering Self-care leaders for each year group who will continue attending monthly workshops so they can share their interpretation of Mastering self-care subjects with their school year peers.
The Mastering Self-care leaders will take part in fundraising, making self-care posters, creating self-care games, create reviews and newsletters to share with peers that will be visible around the school.
Monthly sessions will also support local health & wellbeing Practitioners working in Croydon, including school counsellors. Each monthly session, the children will get to have a taster of health & wellbeing classes to review and share their experiences with peers at school, encouraging the uptake of local services as well as encouraging children to take up health and wellbeing classes through experience.
Croydon has the largest number of youth within one area that will increase year on year. Croydon is also listed as one of the most deprived areas in London meaning our children are likely to experience adversity when trying to navigate life.
As if that is not bad enough, the mental health and wellbeing affects of the pandemic are going to be far reaching across our communities for years to come.
What makes us unique is that the project deals with root causes that affect confidence, self-worth, mind-set and attitude that would ordinarily if not addressed create limiting emotional, physical, social and economical effects not allowing our community to accept and excel the opportunities Croydon and London have to offer, often accepting less than we as a community are capable of.
Therefore this project is paramount in the recovery from these challenging and adverse times. Creating a open and empowering pathway for our next generation to lead the way to success.
JSNA estimated that there were 21,000 children and young people in Croydon, with some form of mental health need.
Suicide is the leading cause of death in 5-19-year-olds in England and wales in 2017 according to the ONC
“In an average classroom, 4 children will have a clinically diagnosed mental health condition, 7 will have been bullied and 8 will have experienced severe physical violence, sexual abuse or neglect” NBC
The project will become sustainable from subscriptions to monthly workshops where the children will learn a new health & wellbeing skill covering mind, body, soul & emotions, they will learn about monthly health and wellbeing events and much much more. All learnings are shared with the year group that they lead through innovative creations and leadership of the children, strengthening existing skills, capabilities and natural interests that will elevate them into obtaining excellent opportunities as they mature into adulthood. Using any adversity as an opportunity to learn and use it as a stepping stone for experience.
Your pledge that you choose to make today will create exceptional change in your community, utilising our children with all the self-care tools we should have learnt when we were younger. You will be supporting a preventative approach, with the power of preventing generational trauma and limiting beliefs that result in serious mental ill health, serious physical ill health or behavioural and criminal behaviours, continuing into our next generation. Instead you are helping to creating empowered young people and families to be a strong and resilient community
We will collect both qualitative and quantitative data which will be shared with relevant children's foundations and public health in the prevention of children's ill mental health and in the hope to evidence the need for further funding and services within this area.
We will have a unique opportunity to capture children's health and wellbeing journey from early childhood to adolescence, leading the way for a preventative approach and support health and wellness in children so they are utilised with the right education and self-care tools to live happy and healthy lives as adults.
